On June 30th, USA Today published an article highlighting the disproportionate rates of homelessness among LGBTQ+ youth, especially Black and transgender teens. The article draws attention to the urgent need for community-led, data-informed solutions, and features insight from our very own Dr. Coco Auerswald.

In the piece, Dr. Auerswald emphasizes that youth are the experts in their own experiences and should be at the center of designing and leading responses to homelessness.

Check out the article, “To understand youth experiencing homelessness, this UC Berkeley professor hires them,” published by UC Berkeley News on June 5th. This article provides a brief background on YAAH faculty lead, Dr. Auerswald, along with highlights from an interview with her in which she speaks of the lab. Dr. Auerswald emphasized the importance of bringing young people with lived experience onto the team as researchers.

Youth and Allies Against Homelessness is proud to announce that one of our YAAH Lab's undergraduate researchers, Kate Chung, has been selected as an Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship (URAP) Summer Fellow for her ongoing research on “Population Size Estimation of Youth Experiencing Homelessness.” The URAP Summer Fellowship supports undergraduate students and allows them to continue impactful research projects over the summer. In the lab, Kate uses capture-recapture methods to link administrative data from service providers.

Dr. Coco Auerswald was recently honored with the Anne B. Stanton Award at the Larkin Street Youth Services’ 23rd annual Paving the Way Gala in San Francisco on May 8th. The award recognized Dr. Auerswald’s decades of work advancing equity, youth voice, and data-driven solutions to end youth homelessness.

In her speech, Dr. Auerswald reflected on her long-standing partnership with Larkin Street and the role young people hold in shaping her research. Read more about the event and award below!

The first-ever Young People to the Front (YP2F) Youth Homelessness Research Conference brought together a powerful mix of researchers, advocates, service providers, and young people to tackle one of Los Angeles’ most urgent and under-researched issues: youth homelessness. The event focused on bridging the gap between data, lived experience, and practical solutions to better support unhoused youth across the city.
