v.1. Implementing Housing Models for Youth

One of the first steps towards achieving independent living is providing short-term and long-term housing programs for youth using a Housing First for Youth approach. Housing options for youth need to be tailored to the unique circumstances and needs of youth. Examples of strategies related to this intervention area include youth-specific Transitional Housing, Joint TH/RRH programs, Rapid Re-Housing (RRH) programs, mediation strategies for landlords, eviction prevention, and implementation of more flexible referral processes to housing.

Resource:

  • The Healthy Teen Network has created a list of resources to help young people who are pregnant and experiencing homelessness find housing, among other services and programs. They highlight transitional housing models for pregnant and/or parenting youth, which are funded by the federal Runaway and Homeless Youth Act program. These homes provide access to services such as childcare, health care, transportation, counseling, education, and employment assistance.
