Amber Peak and Shukri Suhir Honored at UC Berkeley Commencement

May 21, 2025

Two of our amazing team members, Amber Peake and Shukri Suhir, were recently awarded UC Berkeley Class of 2025 Student Awards at the School of Public Health Commencement Ceremony on May 19th, 2025.

Amber Peake, who worked as both an undergraduate and graduate researcher within the YAAH lab, was given the Sheldon Margen Award. Amber was chosen because she best exemplifies Dr. Margen’s voracious curiosity and ability to draw upon multiple disciplines to address the health problems of society’s most vulnerable. Amber will continue her education path at the University of Nevada, Reno in the School of Medicine next Fall.

Next, the Henrik L. Blum Award for Distinguished Social Action was awarded to Shukri Suhir, a Masters student in Epidemiology and Biostatics. This award recognizes a graduating student whose public health work reflects his legacy of social justice and democratic action. Shukri worked as an undergraduate with the YAAH lab, and stayed connected throughout his graduate program.

The YAAH lab is extremely proud of Amber and Shukri, and it was an honor to nominate them for these prestigious awards. The entire team is incredibly grateful for what they contributed to the lab and to youth homelessness research.
